Z Chronicles Surge of The Dead Volume 2 A L White 9781505989854 Books

This second book is better than the first. The characters are more developed and the are a few twists. Yes, it is suspenseful but it doesn't overwhelm the reader causing one to go back and re-read something that may have been missed. I like the addition and development of the evolution of the zombies. This is definitely an improvement over the first book. I look forward to the third book. I think any lover of zombie lore should add this series to their collection.

Z Chronicles Surge of The Dead Volume 2 A L White 9781505989854 Books Reviews

In his sophomore release, A.L. White has shown an exponential growth in his story telling, through and through. Everything that you love about his first book (i.e. the characters, the suspense, the direction of the story) is even better in "Surge of the Dead." The characters are even more personable, and that's with a larger crew to incorporate, the suspense is tenfold (sorry, no spoilers here), and the story has expanded to bring you in to a much more complex world. More importantly, the story takes it's time where it may have been rushed in the first book, adding more dimension and insight into the characters, the situation that they are in, and how their situation could affect all other aspects of the story. Personally, I loved the first book, but "Surge of the Dead" has improved upon the solid foundation of "Z Chronicles" so much, that it feels as if it were written by an author with many more years of experience. And to think that this is only A.L. White's second book! If you're a fan of suspense, zombies, or just a great story in general, "Surge" is one that you don't want to pass up.
Despite the difficulties I had with the first book, Z Chronicles Beginning (not sure how to link my review, but it's there and I believe is either the only one, or one of few two-star reviews if you're interested) , I decided to go ahead and read the second installment in the series. This is a testament to the the good parts about the first book - the characters are engaging, the plot and pacing are good, and the story is tense. I very much wanted to see what happened to Virginia, and who was in those buses, because clearly the story line was taking a turn. In this book, the world expands considerably, and many new characters are introduced. The threat becomes much more substantial, both in size and behavior, and this makes for interesting and fun reading. The arc of Virginia's character continues to develop satisfyingly, as does that of Lori.

However the problems in the first book not only persist here, but new problems crop up. Again, the grammar problems are bad enough that it made me question whether or not the book had been edited, or even reviewed by some advanced readers ahead of time. One reviewer suggested that through communicating with the author and understanding that the author wrote and re-wrote, he understood how mistakes from the first book were improved. Personally, I did not see this improvement. As before, words were incorrectly used, such as passed / past, then / than, and worse / worst. As with the first book, if this had been a "here and there" issue, I would have just kept reading, but the problem is so pervasive, that it's frustrating as a reader. In my review for the first book, I mentioned that quotations were misplaced at times, making it hard to know if what I was reading was someone talking or narrative. This continues here, too, and worse yet, in some places names are reversed - Hank for Tom in one case and Zoe for someone else (there were a lot of characters in that scene, so it was hard to tell) in another. In the latter case, I had to re-read the section to figure out who was talking and what was really going on. Word choice when characters were speaking was also awkward. Most people, when speaking, use a lot more contractions (e.g., "it's" rather than "it is") than the characters did in the book. This left me feeling as though the dialogue was not realistic. So, I'm re-reading because of word choice, grammar issues and oversights in content, which is frustrating.

The other thing I wanted to point out is that the gaps in the plot line continue here and in some cases are even bigger and more distracting. SPOILER ALERT The group comes upon a farmhouse that Virginia has already scouted and found to be empty (at the end of the first book). When the group comes up, there is another group now occupying the house. A "large man" opens the door. No names are exchanged at this point, and we are not given any idea regarding who is in the house (how many, male or female) but our protagonists negotiate their way in. We never find out their backstory, but at least tell us who is who. Soon after, several characters appear in the story with no explanation as to who they are. I presumed they were the ones in the house, but was the "large man" Roy, or Jermaine? I'd have at least like to have known that. It's like all of a sudden there are all these people whose names are mentioned, and who are talking, but without even a reference to who they are; it's too abrupt and initiates these characters into the story without any depth at all. A short scene where all the characters introduce themselves would have avoided this issue. The downstream impact of this is that later scenes were not as engaging and powerful as they could have been. For example Taquisha's outburst and subsequent actions at the point of her demise was a hollow scene for me. I actually had a negative reaction to the choice of plot in this instance. Because there was no foundation for it, it seemed over-the-top.

One other example I'll mention that really bummed me out when the reveal happened was the connection between Lori and Walter, not Wally (which was cute, I have to say). So Lori meets Walter at the drive-in, and he joins the group on their way to town. No backstory; he's just a kid. No problems so far; they're in a bug-out situation. Later in the story, however, Lori has an "incident" (I don't want to spoil it all; this is actually one of the best parts of the story line) and Walter is there, involved. He mentions that he knows that Lori is "like him". They go to the RV together to absorb what's going on with Lori and he makes vague references to what is going on and controlling it. So, what's the deal? We know what's going on with Lori, but how did Walter get the same way? What does he experience? Doesn't Lori want to know? It seems as though Walter is able to control it; how?

As a reader, I felt that so much potential was lost here. There are a lot of zompocalypse stories out there, and I like the genre very much. It's difficult to differentiate yourself as an author in this genre right now. What's going on with Lori and Walter is the one thing in this series that has the most potential to differentiate the Z Chronicles from other books in the genre, and it's just dropped at this point. Perhaps the author did not want to detract from the impact of what happens when Virginia is rescued, but I think some more strategic depth here would have created some nice tension and anticipation, which actually would have made that later scene have even more punch.

There is a lot to like about the story and characters, and I wanted to like this book more than the first and more than I did, but in the end I felt let down.
I have been focusing a lot on history and how-to type books lately. My book reviews have also become a little more scarce due to my busy schedule. Every now and then, I feel the need to put seriousness aside and indulge in a little guilty pleasure. Zombies!

Author A.L. White did a great job at his first attempt at writing with Z Chronicles The Beginning (review here) and was happy to see him follow it up with another in the series. Z Chronicles Surge of the Dead as it ties in nicely with the first book and picks up where we left off. Please keep in mind, they can be read independently if one so desires.

Contains SPOILERS to the first book
The first in the series left off with Lori and Virginia and the lads trying to survive the Zombie Apocalypse while following the map given to them by Bob. Virginia is watching Lori’s story unfold and we continue down the rabbit hole that is the mind of A.L. White.

There has always been the notion of walking, or rather trudging and meandering zombies versus those that run, but White has taken it to a whole new level. He has gone from a regular zombie, if there is such a thing, to zombie 2.0 and beyond. For the zombie “purist” this will simply not do, however after reading the book, I can see the value of opening up my mind a little for this twist on normalcy.

Being a fan of Zombies since I was a child, led me to read many books, comics and watch many movies about Zombies. While some of them were horrible, I can say without a doubt there are a handful that make me want to read or watch again. Z Chronicles is an example of such in that I have read both of them twice and loaned them out to a couple of folks.

There are certain subject matters that I will sit and read a book that is over 200 pages or watch more than 90 minutes, while they are typically historical in nature, this is unfortunately where I draw the line on one zombie story. My attention is hard to keep after that period of time. This is only one of the reasons why I like Z Chronicles and specifically, Surge of the Dead.

While being less than 200 pages, my mind is not given much time to wander. Mr. White does a fantastic job of leading you along a path and surprising you with something you may not have seen coming. It amazes me at how the development of a character plays such a key role in an author’s ability to do this.

After reading the book and speaking to A.L. White, I mentioned that his writing had vastly improved from the first book. While I enjoyed The Beginning, it was a little lacking. I have been able to walk through this process with him and know that he wrote, rewrote, scrapped everything, and then rewrote the second in the series before publishing. It undeniably shows in this work.

I was very happy to have been able to review this literary work and look forward to any more he has planned in the series. Even if he does not write another book about zombies, I think he has the talent to write on many other subjects.

I hope you enjoy the book as much as I have.
Action and adventure with plenty of zombie blood and guts. Where will it all end? The next installment beckons to be read.
