Adventurous Children of the Donner Party edition by Holly Bennett Children eBooks
This book was a well written combination of nonfiction and fictional exploits of early American Pioneers heading west from Illinois to California. The author has done a masterful job using actual known documented adventures during the fateful trip of the Donner Party, which took place 170 years ago. The main characters of the story are actually the children in the convoy, told from their standpoint. The novel weaves in and out of tough situations that actually befell the party, using much of the lingo and landscape they must have seen through their eyes for the first time.I highly recommend this book for anyone with a penchant for historical significance, and especially children in upper grade school. This could be used as a part of actual curriculum for students, as I am sure they will appreciate the richly defined circumstances along the way. One can only imagine the amount of ingenuity, strength, and will to persevere. One amazing example is during a particularly steep incline that needed to be navigated, in which the team used a primitive rope-and-pulley system to literally lift several large wagons up the face of a cliff, all during terrible weather in a treacherous mountainous area.
This instant classic would be a great tutorial for children, and could be used to present ideas that are just not common any more in the information age we currently live in. The author also goes to great lengths to describe the happenings to members after completion of the journey, and how they ended up in different parts of California, Nevada, and Oregon several years later. Bravo, an excellent read from beginning to end!!

Adventurous Children of the Donner Party edition by Holly Bennett Children eBooks Reviews
Very informative book of the people that were part of the Donner party. Easy to read and follow. True history that is still shocking to me!
This is a well-researched chronicle of several families of the Donner-Reed wagon train and their trek across the country in the mid 1840s. Ms Bennett's imagination brings to life the ordeal, suffered especially by the children, as mishap, bad planning, horrendous weather and human frailty propel the expedition to disaster. Although written for children, this work will be of interest to readers of all ages.
This is a well- researched, engrossing story of the hardships of the Donner Party children. It is also an interesting story of settlers moving west. You really feel like you are on the journey with the families, who are interesting and brave. I recommend this book
I found this book to be very interesting and filled with vivid details. I definitely learned a great deal while reading this book. It was a page turner!
Holly Bennett treats history fans with a new telling of the ill-fated Donner-Reed Wagon Train emigration to 1840s California in this book.
Most readers will have heard of the climax to the story – how half of the original crew members were caught in impassable weather in the winter of 1846 near the present location of Donner Lake in the high Sierras. And how cold it was, and how deep the snow was, and how the food ran out, and how – – – well, you have heard the story.
Holly adds details about the formation of the party in Springfield, Ill. in Spring of 1846 and brings many characters into form as believable, real people, including the children of the Donner and Reed families. Holly has been studying the event for 10 years and drew research from 16 earlier academic and literary sources.
Holly focuses on the children, revealing them with credible voices, roles within their families, and growing pains. Although the dialog and tensions within the family probably come from Holly’s imagination, a reader willing to suspend disbelief about the details will find the story very engaging. Her after-story notes assured me that such characters did exist and did survive and left journal entries for history.
This reviewer had not heard the story before in such detail. The obstacles the Wagon Train members faced all along the trek to the Sierras left me worn out just in the reading. And then, – – –.
At the end of my reading, I wondered if they make children that resolute now-a-days.
