Les Dieux Verts [The Green Gods] (1961) tells of the romance of Prince Aran and Atlena during the Emerald Age of the Earth, in the far future, when Man’s Empire is on the decline and the world is ruled by the eponymous “Green Gods,” powerful entities which arose from the vegetal kingdom. The works of Rosny Award-winner Nathalie Henneberg (1917-1977) stand alone in the French SF landscape of the 1960s. Her use of the language, betraying Germanic and Russian influences, was unusually well-suited to creating larger-than-life heroic characters and epic, mythological romances. Her skills at creating intricately detailed baroque universes was second to none. This new edition translated by Hugo Award winnmer C.J. Cherryh also includes four Henneberg stories translated by SF Grand Master Damon Knight and an introduction by French SF scholar Charles Moreau.

Obviously everyone's tastes differ, thank God, but I do not see how one can justify such an offhand negative review after reading only one chapter of a book, especially when said book is a beloved classic of the sci-fi/fantasy genre.There is no denying that this is not your usual space opera or sword and sorcery formulaic story, but an unusual human and political drama. Or a legend and grand opera on an epic scale if you prefer... It immerses the reader into a suffocating dystopia which feels strangely empty and hopeless in spite of its jungle-like atmosphere: this is not a boy's adventure or a PollyAnna type story and even less a thinly disguised romance novel. Under its fantasy trappings and lush descriptions, this story is about responsibility, the price of love and ultimately, a lesson in self-determination. Or about the confusing and misunderstood remnants of dead civilizations, centuries after their demise. Take your pick.
Though written in 1961, this story has not really aged and I believe it should appeal to a younger audience, but make no mistake, this is no well-meaning Young Adult novel or straightforward coming-of-age story: regardless of their chronological age, these protagonists are adults, whose sense of the duties they were born to defines them and both very much aware of their bigger-than-life responsibilities.
Ch & N. Henneberg writing style is so romantic and so evocative that her books are often described as baroque masterpieces, and most open-minded readers will enjoy this unusual cross between a fairy tale and a high fantasy drama. Though it may be true that one needs to be young enough to appreciate such a grand romantic story, since I first read it when I was 13 or 14, and it is still a personal favorite.
This book is so memorable that I am overjoyed to have found it available as an ebook, since needless to say it went out of print almost immediately. Hopefully, we will eventually see a compilation of all of Nathalie Henneberg's works which include many remarkable classics (hint to any publisher checking this out?)
About this excellent translation: far too often translations completely miss the mark and I usually avoid them entirely, but this is a very happy exception to the rule as one of my favorite authors was translated fittingly by another of my very favorite writers, C.J. Cherryh. Not coincidentally, Cherryh happens to be a superb and strikingly original writer whose subversive depiction of gender roles is unique and always riveting, as well as an author with an unparalleled grasp of human nature at its most heroic, emotional and fallible. The choice she made to translate this one book -which is her only translation work that I know of- is highly indicative.

I read this book in the late 70's and it is still vivid in my mind. Nothing 'flowery' or 'juvenile' in this book.
I read the first chapter and decided to delete it. I couldn't buy the reality of her "universe". I guess I like traditional critters.
This was recommended to me by a friend who is obviously more tolerant than me in regards to the over use of Objective viewpoint narration. From what I did read its adjective heavy, and lacks characterization, being more tied up in being a travelogue of place and time rather than about 'people'.
Its from the post-pulp new wave influenced trend in SF that was popular in the 60s to 70s, and I've always had trouble with SF/Fantasy from that period in being a bit too preachy and bit less plot oriented in many cases. The fact that its translated from French doesn't help, although its a very eloquent translation.
