I have read many of the Elizabeth George's novels - and they are novels rather than genre mysteries. It begins with excellent plotting, good character development, and good setting descriptions. She is one of the best in weaving multiple threads of plot, sub-plot, and sub-sub plot and finally distributing justice for all. In this story, a sleazy tabloid newspaper editor, a liberal, receives a note saying his firstborn has been kidnapped and will die if he doesn't publish the child's true identity. The child is being raised by its mother - a Tory Conservative in the British government. The child was the result of a wild, sex-filled weekend at a conference and there is no good feeling between mom and pop. Dad doesn't publish the story and the child dies. Characters are well drawn at the beginning and through the middle of the story. As the story plays out, I found the characters becoming stereotypes and the murderer becoming obvious. And Lynley's and Havers' roles never vary much from past books. In many sections, I found the prose to be "wordy" and accounting for Ms. George's long novels. I'll get back to Elizabeth George in the future but for now - I've had enough

This is my third reading of this title. Everything Elizabeth George writes is magic to me. While I'm waiting for her next book, I re-read all of her other books - except the one where Helen dies. I was heartbroken by that book, and the following book, but I believe that she is the most renowned author of this time.
I just finished this book yesterday and I wanted it to continue since it was so good. Love her books and highly recommend them. They are written beautifully and the author has a good command of the English language. It was a great book.
(Paperback version.)
This mystery suspense thriller opens with the kidnapping of Charlotte, a.k.a. Lottie, a.k.a. Charlie, the ten-year old daughter of Eve Bowen, the Undersecretary of State for Britain's Home Office. Lottie, we soon discover, is the result of a brief but torrid romance with one Dennis Luxford while Eve attended a political conference eleven years previous. Now, Dennis is the editor in chief of The Source, a "tawdry and noisome" tabloid that has achieved spectacular gains in circulation by exposing the scandalous behavior of Eve's peers in the Tory government. The kidnapper is demanding that Luxford acknowledge his firstborn child on the front page of The Source. The problem is no one except Eve and Luxford are supposed to know that he is Lottie's daddy, and be it known, Eve's political career will be ruined. Certain that Luxford has staged Lottie's disappearance so he can print her humiliating disgrace, Eve hardly acknowledges that "she's gone missing." But the reader knows Dennis is innocent.
Elisabeth George develops this confused situation into an intricate and superbly plotted mystery with well-developed characters and rich dialogue. George writes in the King's (or is it the Queen's?) English, though. You might wonder what's going on when the sprat is told to shut his gob or he'll be gated for talking bosh. But then, it's a mystery isn't it.
Whether or not you're a fan of British mystery genre novels, this is a highly recommended read.
Am reading these books in order, and this is my favorite of the most recent ones. Lots of plot twists, quite unlikable and likable characters, but fans of the series will LOVE this installment.
Really great mystery. Characters were beyond just well written, they were real. I was so totally immersed my foot was shaking and tears were watering my eyes at the end. Fine, fine, fine! Thank you for such a lovely book. Will definitely recommend and will re-read this one even though I know it's secrets already.
This book was way too long. At least three quarters of the book was irrelevant character development. At the end, the culprit could have been anyone of the characters the author wanted to pick. Instead of 600 plus pages, if the book had been about 200 pages I would have felt I had read a decent British police procedural. After having slogged through 600 plus pages, I want my money back.
This year I have made a point to reread my favorite authors starting with their first book to their most recent. Surprisingly, or not, I found an interesting continuity in the characters I had not noticed reading their books a year or so apart as they came out.

I liked finding the continued characters stories in this series.

But the one thing that was glaring and I did not like was Elizabeth George's repeated used of her Roget's Thesaurus in inserting very unnecessary words for the sake of using words very few people ever run across. This repeated use was irritating and lent nothing to her books.

Also, I, in my life, have noticed that when a person spends a lot of time with someone else, the speech mannerisms tend to rub off. Barbara's speech and grammar have not improved a wit in all the time she spends around Lynley and everyone else. Find this hard to believe.

That said, I do love this series and do look forward to her future Lynley books.
