I would not recommend this book. It's far fetched and provides little to no character history. I felt no connection to the H or h and Kandi (h) was just a door mat with no self respect. Kandiland edition by TL Smith Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I had no memory of purchasing this book but found it on my so I thought I'd give it a whirl. It was a fairly short read, but I was ultimately disappointed. This mainly had to do with the hero and heroine and their relationship which appears to be completely based on physical attraction.
I really didn't care for the hero, Huxley, one of those manipulative, emotionally stunted men who insists on only sex-only relationships and doesn't take no for an answer. He's also a thug. Other than his good looks and money, I don't know what else he has to offer and am completely mystified that Kandi's friend, mother, and co-workers encouraging the relationship.
Kandi I liked better but wish she wasn't such a doormat when it came to Huxley. And like him, she felt underdeveloped. She seems to have a pretty good relationship with her mom so why did she feel the need to leave home so badly and not go back? She says she's different from other people, but other than the exterior (pink hair and tattoos), what makes her so different? Is it because she's a painter?
I also couldn't get a bead on the town of Candy. What is this place?
1. It seems like the major industry in town is Candy Village, the strip club. Kandi arrives mentions that at 900 am, the only place that seems to have any activity is the cafe next to the club.
2. No idea of the population or what type of person lives here, but it's enough to pack a strip club every night, have monthly balls at the local castle the hero owns, and have illegal races where people bet hundreds of thousands of dollars. You also have local police, a school, a foster care systems, and an ex-brothel.
3. Huxley offers Kandi a choice of two jobs admin/bookkeeper at the strip club or a dancer at the strip club. That's it? Those are the only two choices available? Granted, he could entirely be manipulating the situation to suit his needs, but what if chose neither?
4. Kandi's cousin, Stacey, comes to visit and loves the town so much that she wants to move there. Why? What about this town is so amazing that she wants to stay? Stacey says that everyone in town is so nice. Who are these people being so nice. Other than a b****y real estate agent, we don't see Kandi or Stacey interact with any of the townspeople.
5. Speaking of said real estate agent, she clearly dislikes Kandi on first meeting her based on Kandi's pink hair and tattoos (tattoos which are never mentioned again). But when four women who work at the strip club come in, she's all smiles and friendliness. You'd think if this woman was going to be uptight about something, it would be directed more towards a stripper than the woman with pink hair.
There are also two "plot twists." One I would say most people would see coming. However, the second I thought served no purpose except to push the hero's emotional journey. I just didn't know if it was really necessary.
By the end I didn't buy their relationship or that they had anything to build on other than really great sex.
T.L Never disappoints! Totes loved this book and would 💯 recommend!
This author is amazing , I've bought several books by t.l and I am never disappointed.
In one sentence, Kandiland is one hell of a ride!!
This book takes off in the middle of an explosive scene at a blistering pace and the velocity is dizzying!
Kandi Leo's dramatic introduction to us left me with more questions than answers, and with typical TL Smith style of dark undercurrent woven in, that kept me turning pages to keep up with the action.
Kandi's starting a new life, in a new town, hoping to mend a broken heart.
But she didn't factor in the intense attraction and interest of her new boss, the distant and aloof King of Candy, Huxley Cross. He owns the town, quite literally, and he wants to own her too, and evidently what Huxley wants, he gets.
There's something almost distant and clinical about TL's style that lends so beautifully to this story, as both characters are emotionally removed from us in the beginning; Kandi having lost love and Huxley having never had it.
It gives her the opportunity to ingratiate us to them in her own way, so that we slowly feel them and their connection, and as always there is no lack of red hot chemistry!
Maintaining her reign as my Dark Queen, another 5 star read!!
I chose this book based on reviews. I found it very stilted and none of the characters fully developed . I kept reading hoping it would get better and it never did. I am a fan of this author but I really felt this book needed much more work. It was just choppy scenes with no substance, even though the idea was good. Sorry
...
This was a fun read with an unexpected emotional turn. I love when a book surprises me. I go in thinking it's going to be a sexy and fun read and end up with all that but also get smacked with all the feels. I love T.L. Smith's words and this book did not disappoint. Kandi and Huxley's story really was fun to read even with the tears it brought on. This is absolutely a must read for T.L. Smith fans.
I really, really wanted to love this story, I did, but it lacked something for me. I'm absolutely in love with this cover and the story inside has the structure to be, more. I needed more grit, bones, more boom.
Kandiland was more of an Insta-love story for me and while every now and then I like a good romance, this book left me wanting more out of it. I felt like there is/was more to some of the scenes than what is on the pages.
I'm a big fan of the authors; I guess not everyone can love everything.
I would not recommend this book. It's far fetched and provides little to no character history. I felt no connection to the H or h and Kandi (h) was just a door mat with no self respect. Save your money.
