This book is part of a series, I recommend them all, but this book could stand alone. There is a great cast of characters most we have seen in previous books but there are a few new ones. I hope to see a couple of them play a part in future books. There are plenty of twists to this story that kept me guessing where the author was going to take the reader. This book has something for everybody, mystery, suspense, and romance. It is a great addition to the series and I eagerly await the next book.

A MERCIFUL SILENCE (Mercy Kilpatrick #4) by Kendra Elliot is a cross between romantic suspense and mystery/suspense genres. Each book has a standalone mystery/suspense plot, but it also has a building romance involving the main characters of the series which may or may not be prominent in each story. The current book leans more towards being a police procedural with emotionally charged murders in the past and present with extremely high stakes for Mercy and Truman.

FBI Special Agent Mercy Kilpartrick is called to the scene of a washed out road which exposes human skeletal remains. As she works to discover the identity of the remains, she remembers two families that were murdered in the exact same manner 20 years ago. The killer has always maintained his innocence and is still in prison. Copycat or has the wrong man been in prison all these years?

When the sole survivor of one of the old murdered families returns to town, Mercy is not sure what to make of the woman. She asks for Mercy’s help because she believes she is being stalked. Mercy feels she knows more than she is telling about that long ago murder. Is she somehow a part of the current murders or is she a lose end that needs to be eliminated?

As Mercy works her case, Eagle’s Nest Chief of Police Truman Daly has a unique traffic stop with a young man who shows illegal ID and claims to be a sovereign citizen. While jailed, he sends Truman a letter claiming he owns him 3 million dollars for an illegitimate arrest. Truman does not know whether to take this seriously or as a joke. These sovereign citizens do not want anyone interfering in their business. Truman and his police vehicle disappear and there is blood on the driveway.

I could not put this book down!

Mercy and Truman both go through so much in this book. Even as they are apart, it is the fight to get home to the other that gives them their strength. Mercy realizes no amount of prep can prepare her for everything. She learns it is OK to sometimes rely on family and friends. Truman’s love for Mercy is his strength and reason to continue on even when he thinks he cannot. This was definitely an edge-of-your-seat read with both cases having such high stakes.

I believe you should read this series in order as the characters grow and change in each book as in real life. I highly recommend this series. Mercy is a memorable character.
Families brutally murdered in their beds, bones found in a flooded ditch, survivalists and sovereign citizens all figure in this action-packed mystery featuring FBI agent Mercy Kilpatrick and Eagle Nest's police chief Truman Daly. Each of the Mercy Kilpatrick books in this series have had tough and devious plots but the plot(s?) in this fourth book had my full attention from start to scary finish. Relished every minute.
Mercy has changed so much since I'd first met her. Always a strong woman, she has shown maturity in how she's handled all the obstacles her career had thrown her way. She's gone from being an almost recluse to bringing her family and her community together; it's as if she's been regarded as an integral part of her community, an epicenter.

Truman was always the steady, quiet, strong character. He knows what he wants and understand Mercy enough to let her slowly reach the place in which she can fully feel loved and safe.

And the mysteries continue to be good, although it was boring to read two books in a row where we're introduced to the "other" narrator throughout the whole book. I enjoy when the possible antagonist is introduced early and even when we're allowed to hear his/her voice. I just don't enjoy reading two books one after the other with that same style.

Still, on to book five.
Mercy Kilpatrick & her sheriff boyfriend, Truman, are thrown in the midst of a murder investigation when multiple skeletal remains are found. Similar blunt-force trauma took a family 20 years ago. Only the daughter survived & is still trying to deal with her nightmares. A man sits in prison, convicted of the multiple murders. Could there be a copycat or is the convicted man innocent. As the investigation expands, Mercy, Truman & the survivor find their lives in danger. Ms Elliot has woven an interesting tale, but felt she needed to scatter profanity throughout the book, which added nothing to the story! I would have given the novel a 4.5 rating without the profanity. Have some faith in yourself & your reading audience, Ms Elliot.
Love this series, and this book added another layer of Outstanding!!! Truman is one of my favorite characters. The non stop suspenseful action in this book, had me on the edge of my seat with the pages steadily turning. What a plot - what an ending - Incredible!!!!!!!
Romantic suspense doesn't get any better than this!!!
The book is a good read, but I did not like the use of the vulgar words and curse words, when the book would have just a good without them My mother always told me, "if you have to use"bad" words or vulgar words, then you don't have a lot to say. The book and the other books Kendra Elliott has written would be much better without them. I purchased other books she has written and stopped reading the first in the series because of the language. It seemed to be words than this book.
